I joined Sharyl Attkisson and Paul Farhi on Howie Kurtz's "Media Buzz" today to talk about the growing nightmare for Brain Williams and NBC News since "Stars and Stripes" reported Wednesday on his lies about covering the the invasion of Iraq in 2003.
I have been writing and talking about this story since, and it is a big one - the highest-rated anchor on network TV under a kind of fire I have not seen since the Dan Rather report on George W. Bush that ultimately led to the resignation of the longtime CBS anchor.
I believe Williams should be forced to step down as anchor and managing editor of the "NBC Nightly News," but that is going to mean a big financial hit for this network. In addition to the life and death struggle Williams is in to save his career, this ordeal is also a test of NBC's values.
If Williams does survive and NBC allows him to continue, what will happen to the network's credibility -- and its ratings lead?
This conversation explored some of the ways the hole Williams dug with his Iraq lies is deepening.Copyright © 2019, The Baltimore Sun
