Yesterday, having gotten through the Baltimore disturbances, a vacation, and the return to harness, I resumed posting the word of the week, to which one reader replied, "Have you completely abandoned the jokes?"
Here's the thing. It has become increasingly difficult and laborious to find jokes that are (a) more or less funny and (b) appropriate for this site. (I have an instinct that my editor would not be pleased to find me working blue.) After nearly five years of a joke a week, give or take, Hollywood has never called, and the well is dry.
I'm not going to resort to groaner puns or team up with another editor to do knock-knock jokes. Improbable as it may seem, I have standards.
I'm toying with the idea of selecting two dozen or so of the jokes I thought were the funniest and running them as a farewell, but apart from that, it appears to be time to ring down the curtain.
