No Scholar Gypsies in Evanston

Note: A more alert reader than I points out that the article prompting this post is more than two years ago.

In Evanston, Illinois, a proposal to build an extended-stay hotel has prompted opposition from the Southeast Evanston Association, a neighborhood group that fears the hotel will devolve into "cheap housing for transient academics."*

We turn now to comments overheard at an emergency meeting of the Southeast Evanston Association.**

"I say if they can't get tenure, they don't belong here."

"The whole neighborhood will be crawling with adjuncts."

"Yes, and you know adjuncts don't get paid enough to live on, so they'll be in the bars cadging for drinks and begging for pocket change on street corners."

"And after dark it'll be worse. Roving gangs of feral academics."

"Police should round them up and drop them in Skokie."

"Lefties—they're all lefties."

"Evanston is no place for anarcho-syndicalists."

"They all read books. And what kind of books do you think they'll bring into the neighborhood?"

"Chaucer!"

"Rabelais!"

"BAL-zac!"

"Is the federal government going to force us to let them use our bathrooms?"

*I am not making this up, you know.
