On this date in 1986, I received a telephone call from Andy Faith, the copy desk chief of The Baltimore Sun, offering me a position on the desk.
I had interviewed and tried out the previous October, but Andy had not had a permanent offer in his gift at that time.
When I informed my supervisor at The Cincinnati Enquirer that I had received an offer from The Sun, such was his joy at the prospect of my leaving that he announced to the staff that I had accepted a position in Baltimore before I actually gave him notice.
As I prepared to leave Cincinnati, Jean Denton, who with her husband, Lowell, had employed me for six summers at The Flemingsburg Gazette when I was in high school and college, tried to console my mother.
"Now, Marian," she said, "I know you're sad to see John Early move to Baltimore and take those children with him, but, as smart as he is, you knew he wasn't going to work forever for those pissants at The Cincinnati Enquirer."
