Rena Steinzor wrote a good commentary ("Why are polluters getting discounts?" Dec. 27) about how confined animal feeding operations (CAFOs) get away with polluting year after year. I cannot understand how, though, she and other environmentalists could totally ignore the hideous animal cruelty that this extreme confinement inflicts on these innocent animals. The pollution, the antibiotics that end up in our food and the cruelty to other living beings are all reasons that point to this agribusiness model as being just plain wrong. I must say, though, that it is the animal cruelty that keeps me awake at night. I will never understand how humans can ignore and accept that.
