Tolls should not become an indirect tax

I agree with your recent editorial ("Md. tolls: good politics, bad policy," Sept. 18) that how the state has handled the toll situation does not foster trust in government.

Should the additional revenues generated by the rise in toll fees be used for any other budgetary purpose, then the increase amounts to nothing more than an indirect tax. Frankly, any fee coming out of my pocket should be regarded as a tax.

I fear our state government will take a lesson from the federal government and its handling of the Social Security trust fund.
