Red lights: Traffic should move whenever coast is clear

There is renewed interest in the traffic signal problems in the area because of Hurricane Irene. I could not agree more that there is a better way to cross intersections.

Also, I have personally studied traffic at signaled intersections and sent my findings to many in high places, including The Sun. The traffic signal solution is very workable and easy to implement: Just make a public announcement that one can cross or turn onto a signaled intersection whenever the coast is clear. I call this EZ Cross.

MayorStephanie Rawlings-Blake and city traffic engineers should have this simple rule in place with obvious restrictions. And The Sun should have already brought this item to the public's attention through interviews with the folks responsible for traffic. City commuters deserve this attention and privilege.
