Here it is, the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks. Time once again for American flags to line streets and people to sing, "God Bless, America." Chants of "U-S-A, U-S-A," will echo throughout college and pro stadiums. All acts of remembrance, but where are the acts of repentance?
The finger of God was on this country a decade ago. God uses evil events for a purpose. God spoke in Isaiah 45:7, "I make peace, and create evil: I, the LORD, do all these things." God is in control. Man proposes, God disposes.
Our Creator isn't impressed with patriotism. Americanism and Christianity don't mix. The Presidential 2002 Patriot Day Proclamation speaks of ensuring justice and making sure freedom prevails. The Presidential 2009 Patriot Day and National Day Of Service and Remembrance Proclamation speaks of Americans participating in meaningful service activities. Any mention of submitting to God, seeking His forgiveness for our sins, fasting, repentance? Nope.
America prays for God's protection. But, without prayerful and meaningful repentance, America will incur righteous judgment. The events of 9/11 were a wake up call for America. Did she hear? Is she still feasting upon her sins? America isn't improving.
Some Americans have an hysterical notion of fearing Islam and Muslims. America needs instead to, "Fear God, and keep his commandments for this is the whole duty of man," to quote Ecclesiastes 12:13. Righteousness is the cure for a nation seeking peace and protection. Patriotism will not save a nation.
What will you do on 9/11? Wave an American flag? Sing, "God Bless, America?" Watch football all day? Or, will you fast, repent for your sins and pray for God's forgiveness? Remember Psalm 9:17: "The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all nations that forget God."
