Could speed cameras make roads less safe?

The controversy in Baltimore County, and other localities, over speed-recording cameras is very interesting ("Speed camera number cap lifted," Feb. 8). Perhaps it is "an effective tool for making roads safer," or perhaps not.

Until I recently received a speed-camera-recorded citation I had not received a speeding ticket for over 60 years, Yes, I was travelling above the posted speed limit, but I consider my ticket-less record an indication of my safe driving.

However, since receiving my recent citation, I find myself paying significantly more attention to my speedometer than I do the highway in front of me. Perhaps this distraction, if experienced by others, will not lead to "making roads safer."
