I was glad to hear that some potential mayoral candidates are interested in Loyola professor Steve Walters' plan to cut the city property tax to 1 percent in 4 years. I plan to vote for whomever that candidate is, notwithstanding my high regard for Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake. It seems like a no-brainer that this would be an incentive for bringing people into the city, and as he pointed out, it has worked in Boston and San Francisco.
I currently pay $4,165 in property tax for a one bedroom condo of 880 square feet, and I feel this is extortion for such a modest amount of space.
I realize that politicians rarely fulfill their campaign promises, but one can only hope for the sake of the city and those who struggle to live here that something will be done.
