CCBC welcomes veterans

I work closely with veterans at the Community College of Baltimore County, and I'm dismayed that the support and great work we do for these brave men and women is being overshadowed by Charles Whittington's atypical story ("Iraq veteran no longer wants to return to CCBC after he was barred for essay on killing," Jan. 5).

Hundreds of veterans walk through our doors each year seeking support and guidance in obtaining their degrees and pursuing new career paths. We listen to each student and help them make the most of their military benefits.

Whether it's getting help maneuvering the GI Bill paperwork or finding a sympathetic ear, our veterans often praise us for the support they receive — even while overseas. We connect them with flexible programs and schedules, scholarships, financial aid, academic advisement, even career guidance and mental health counseling. That's why CCBC has been named among the top military friendly colleges by a national military journal.

It is our honor to serve the nearly 800 veterans CCBC currently enrolls. It's unfortunate that this negative story may lead people to be discouraged and misinformed about the many and amazing ways our veterans are succeeding at CCBC.
