On Sunday, I rode in the Tour du Port, an annual bike ride through Baltimore that serves as a fundraiser for One Less Car. I enjoyed the ride but am ashamed of Baltimore's bicycling community. With few exceptions, cyclists blew through stop signs and stop lights as it was convenient for them. Laws and safety be damned.

I applaud One Less Car for having a safety briefing before the ride, the first rule of which was that bicycles are vehicles in Maryland and are legally bound to follow the same laws as cars. This talk should have been completely unnecessary. People riding in this fashion endanger themselves and other riders. They make it more difficult for their children, grandchildren, everyone, to become safe, successful cyclists.

Baltimore City Police need to issue tickets to those who break the law. For our city to become a better place for everyone, cyclists must to do their part and ride legally and safely. Come on people, you're only hurting your own cause!
