Dime a drink tax will save lives

Marc Kilmer takes issue with Vincent Demarco's opinion that Maryland sin taxes save lives and save dollars (Readers Respond, Aug. 23). He thinks there won't be enough money to fund specified programs.

Who really cares? Taxing cigarettes reduced smoking, and further taxing alcohol will reduce drunkenness and definitely save lives, even if it doesn't produce as much additional money as predicted.

The only bad thing will be that, with far less drinking going on, there will also be far less crime.

There will be hardly anything for The Baltimore Sun to write about anymore.

I would like that a lot.
