Amount spent on elections is disgraceful

It is a disgrace and clear evidence of the need for election funding reform that the two top candidates for governor have almost $10 million to squander on egotistical self promotion ("O'Malley, Ehrlich raise more than $3 million each," Aug. 13). Even if we were not cutting funding for education, public safety, programs for the disabled and health care, this amount of money would be better spent donated to charity. The proliferation of signs is an environmental blight and, at some intersections, a safety hazard. The signs only serve to notify me of a business proprietor's political bent so, in some cases, I will no longer support their establishment.

We need more than two parties in our political system — a party that represents the people rather than the special interests.
