O'Malley deserves more credit for tuition freeze

The Sun's editorial ("Tuition Politics," June 13) giving Gov. Martin O'Malley a mere slight edge for freezing Maryland university tuition rates for four years over ex-Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr., who allowed it to rise by 40 percent, can only be interpreted as doctrinaire adherence to two-sided "objective" journalism. Common sense clearly states that keeping college tuition at zero growth is a great boon for the citizens of Maryland. It really helps middle class families especially, as well as poor and rich families who (as any Republican would argue) can take this tuition savings and spend it how they want to meet their family's needs. If a student cannot get one class needed to graduate on time, that student can begin their career and take that class at night; it's not hard.

In comparison, ex-Governor Ehrlich allowed tuition to rise by 40 percent as the article stated — a real tax hike on any aspiring Maryland family — while still campaigning as a low-tax Republican (in political rhetoric only). Real conservatives should embrace zero tuition growth, as should all the citizens of Maryland. Investing in low tuition for our children, compared to expensive prisons and addictive slot machines, is a plus for state that will boost both the economy and democracy in the long run for a long time.
