I applaud Attorney General Douglas F. Gansler's opinion that marriage licenses issued to same-sex couples by other states can be recognized by the state of Maryland. This is clearly an issue of equal rights before the law, and Gov. Martin O'Malley should issue any executive orders necessary to put this policy in effect.

Maryland is on record as a progressive state, but it has been sorely lacking in recognizing the benefits of marriage for same-sex couples. Opponents of recognizing marriages for same-sex couples should ask themselves, "How does this directly affect me?" and "Why should I be in favor of restricting minority rights?"

Regarding Del. Emmett Burns' comment that this "will go to referendum and [I] will win," I would ask him if majorities made all decisions, would schools be integrated? Would black candidates hold office? Would we need a deliberative legislative body at all? And when did rights become about an individual "winning"? Let us move in the direction of expanded access to rights.
