What the proponents of Proposal G in the West Towson/Rodgers Forge Elementary redistricting matter fail to realize (or won't admit publicly) is that under any of the four proposals, some children who can currently walk to Rodgers Forge Elementary School will be bused to West Towson.
It is disingenuous for the supporters of Proposal G to premise their support based on their proximity to the school because Proposal G will still force other people who live nearby to be bused away. The supporters of Proposal G couch their viewpoint in terms of neighborhood unity when it is really little more than neighborhood chauvinism.
Although we were a minority at the redistricting committee meeting at Dumbarton Middle School on Jan 20, many of us who were in attendance believe that Proposal G is the least beneficial to the surrounding community. The author of the Sun's article on the matter ("Parents relieved by school districting plan," Jan. 21) did a disservice to readers by drawing a conclusion from a mere few conversations.
Proposal G insures homogeneity, insularity and exclusivity for the Rodgers Forge Community by removing from the Rodgers Forge Elementary School district a large percentage of special education students as well as those who receive free and reduced-price lunches. The NIMBYism, exclusivity and neighborhood chauvinism expressed by many in the Rodgers Forge community begs the question -- if the issue of walkability to the school is moot (since under any proposal, some walkers will be bused), is support of Proposal G really about excluding some members of the community from a neighborhood school?
It sure looks that way from here.
