Developmentally disabled depend on state funding

Baltimore Sun

As a parent of two developmentally disabled sons, I wanted to respond to the editorial "A true need," Dec. 27.

I think it's about time that someone highlighted the needs of this important population. The funding for services is inadequate at best and needs to be fixed. These folks could live full, productive lives if the services were there for them.

My sons depend on the dedicated service providers who help support them both in school and at work. When the services they receive are cut and they lose the consistency of the coaches they like, it's hard.

Also, when funding is cut, they lose the opportunities we "normal" people take for granted, like living on their own or affording transportation to and from work.

It's absolutely correct to call their needs a "true need." We are talking about their quality of life and the lives of those, like me, who care for them and want the best possible life for our family members with developmental disabilities.

Our governor and those who serve in the General assembly need to understand that every time they cut funding for these critical services, they endanger the lives and well-being of thousands of Maryland citizens and affect those who care for them.Linda Kerxton
