The much-awaited report by the Senate Intelligence Committee on the CIA's use of torture has been released ("Holding the CIA to account," Dec. 9). It reveals behaviors and policies even worse than what has previously been known. The torture performed by CIA agents or their contractors was ineffective, just as Sen. John McCain has made clear to us. The acts committed were bestial and inhuman, and they were illegal under U.S. federal law and under the Geneva conventions. As we are a nation of laws, the officials responsible for either ordering or condoning this torture program must be prosecuted. It is shameful that we as Americans allowed these practices to be carried out in our name, and that the Obama administration has not even lifted a finger to bring the guilty officials to account. Write to the U.S. Department of Justice to demand that that the officials responsible be prosecuted post haste.
