I am appalled by the disclosures of the CIA's torture report on the treatment of suspected terrorist detainees ("Report condemns CIA over torture," Dec. 10).
Not only does the treatment defy the Geneva Conventions to which we subscribe, they undermine our moral standing as a nation. I thought that such actions were beneath our dignity. Apparently not.
The only redeeming aspect of the whole revelation is that we and our press came clean regarding our own sordid conduct.
As a Muslim American, I am constantly fighting an uphill battle to demonstrate in word and deed that I stand with America on the moral high ground in the war against terror. Now my identity as an American has been implicated in wrongdoing as well.
My Ahmadi Muslim community's motto is "Love for all, hatred for none." That trumps all of the wavering and apparently loosely held values I am supposed to hold as an American.
