Thanks to The Sun's editorial board for celebrating the Terps women as they readied themselves for the Final Four last weekend ("Can the Huskies be tamed?" April 3).
In the article you point out the "shame" that these fine athletes get very little attention relative to the men. May I suggest you look to the sports department of The Sun?
Your coverage of this team is limited to "subcontracting" reports from The Washington Post or cribbing from the umterps.com Web page. Someone recently asked what I thought it would take for The Sun to really cover the Terps, to which I replied: "Get to the Final Four."
The Sun sports reporter actually made the trek of an hour drive (two times, no less) to College Park for the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament, which was quite a surprise. I'm hoping that wasn't your "punching the ticket" for direct coverage of the Women Terps for this season, but I wouldn't be surprised.
Looking back I recall a very unfortunate article about a Maryland-Duke game a few seasons ago and the Terps NCAA Championship in 2006 being noted pretty far down the list of The Sun's top sporting events of the first decade of this century — behind a number of Ravens regular season games.
Oh, and this season they won an important Big Ten game but the sports front page was given to a game between the men (of course) who support the Terps men's Basketball team and their counterparts on "whatever" Big Ten team.
Maryland women's basketball is one of the best programs at the university as well as in the NCAA, but The Sun sports department appears to have direct interest in only the men's program. The first step to giving this perennially great team the attention the editorial department seems to think they deserve is to look to your own house and get your Sports Department to give them a beat reporter.
I drive from Hampden to all their home games, and maybe if The Sun had someone making that drive others might be inclined to make it as well.
