Letter writer Emmanuel McCray's complaint about paid sick leave needs a qualifying statement in my opinion ("Sick leave can be a lifesaver," Jan. 31).
Workers need to accumulate their sick leave for emergencies. As a former employee of Baltimore County, I have experienced first-hand employees squandering their 15 days of paid sick leave before the spring of the school year and then complaining that they have no sick days left.
We know that many folks abuse their sick leave with so-called "mental health days" and have sick leave or personal days tapped for numerous times arriving late for work. One's choice of how they use sick leave has consequences for each employee. We need to be responsible for our workplace behavior by not looting sick leave.
