Who is moving to Baltimore? Lots of potential Red Line passengers

I have been reading with interest your recent editorials about the future of Baltimore's Red Line ("Don't kill the 'Jobs Line,'" Jan. 4),

Many strong arguments have been made for the construction of the Red Line, and I don't want to undermine them. But I would feel remiss if I didn't address something being missed in the conversation.

Who is moving to Baltimore? The data show that the 25- to 34-year-old demographic has increased by 92 percent. Other data from the Federal Highway Administration reveal a culture shift among the millennial generation, with only 30 percent of 16-year-olds getting a driver's license in 2008.

While we are experiencing huge movement into Baltimore by educated young adults, we will fail to keep them unless we improve our public transit by building the Red Line.

Investing in the Red Line will ensure continued population movement into Baltimore, an increased tax base and a strong, vibrant city. We cannot afford to hesitate or veer off course. We need to build the Red Line now.
