Ray Rice had to know it would come to this, that the awful truth about his despicable conduct with respect to Janay Palmer Rice could not be suppressed forever ("In wide-ranging "Today" interview, Janay Rice says Ravens suggested she apologize at May news conference," Dec. 1).
Perhaps he thought he had dodged the bullet with the press conference Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti carefully orchestrated for him a while back, when he looked the camera in the eye and asked for the forgiveness of a city.
But learning that the Ravens "strongly suggested to" Janay Rice that she, who was cold-cocked by her professional athlete boyfriend in an elevator, apologize for the incident — and that the team gave her a script to follow in issuing that apology — was the last straw for me.
Whatever happens between Janay and Ray Rice is their business. What he did to her — the victim of a domestic assault, a young woman who the whole world saw knocked to the floor as her then-fiancé stepped over her inert body — was the second-worst assault she has suffered because of this episode. Mr. Rice victimized Janay that night and the team victimized her again in order to protect its football asset.
So, enough. I was once a season ticket holder. I have been an ardent fan. I celebrated when our football-less town got a team again, and I have hung my Ravens flag out the door every game day since its arrival. But I will not continue fattening its bank account at the expense of Ms. Rice and all the other women like her who are watching this disgusting truth come out, bit by bit and piece by piece. I know the loss of one fan means absolutely nothing to the Ravens. Neither did Janay Palmer Rice.
