Several decades ago, Baltimore City Police went on strike as a last resort over a contract dispute. Immediately, hoodlums swung into action looting businesses and terrorizing citizens living in the inner city. I personally witnessed the criminal activities as I covered the streets in my role as a firefighter and paramedic.
The only officers available were a few supervisors using patrol cars attempting to maintain law and order. I feared for my life as I responded to calls without the security of police backup. It was a long night and I gained a real appreciation for the men in blue.
There are a few bad apples in every occupation, but a majority of the police across our nation place their lives on the line to serve and protect.
