Building a sustainable workforce

The release of the Opportunity Collaborative report highlights the hard work ahead to ensure that adults of all skill levels can find jobs that pay a family supporting wage ("Leaders call for regional approach to disparities," June 8).

Among the many interrelated challenges is a chronic mismatch between the skills workers have and the skills businesses need.

Two years ago, Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz set a new agenda for the county's Workforce Development Council — to close this skills gap and redefine how we support both our businesses and our citizens.

This public-private leadership group is working with businesses, educators and job seekers to re-engineer our career centers and the direct support Baltimore County offers to job seekers and employers. The results will go a long way to building a sustainable workforce.
