Thomas F. McDonough's letter ("Liberals have blood on their hands," Dec. 25) cries out for response. Liberals do not have blood on their hands; neither do conservatives. Those who commit acts of violence are the ones with blood on their hands. Those who advocate for violence do as well. And perhaps one might say that those who promote anger and mistrust and suspicion that lead to violence also have blood on their hands.
So here's my suggestion. Let's stop listening to people or media outlets that just want to rile us up in righteous indignation. Their only interest is their ratings. As a matter of fact, let's stop focusing on blame so much, as if affixing blame solves the problem. How about we focus on actually solving the problem? How about we start listening to what it's really like on the streets for people of color and for police tasked with an extremely difficult job? How about we start viewing those who see things differently than we do as people we can learn from instead of as enemies to be defeated? Don't you think we might all be a lot better off?
