U.S. should not be Israel's lackey

The recent article on President Obama's interactions with Israel ("Obama sticks to Mideast vision, seeks to calm Israel," May 22) demonstrates how flawed U.S. foreign policy is because of our politicians are always pandering to Israel and its powerful pro-Israel lobby.

The U.S. gives Israel $3 billion in military aid every year, our latest weapons technology and our uncritical political support at the U.N. and elsewhere, yet our president has to "soothe Israeli fury over his stance that peace talks should start on the basis of Israel's 1967 borders."

President Obama needs to put his words into actions and end all U.S. aid to Israel, while having us become, for the first time, an honest broker for peace in the Middle East, rather than the lackey for Israel that we have been for too long. Israel's brutal occupation and oppression of the Palestinians continues to be the root cause of the violence in the region and violates both international law and the Fourth Geneva Convention.

Unless and until the U.S. can stand up to Israel, there will never be an Israeli-Palestinian peace settlement and the U.S. will never be free from terrorist threats around the world.
