Recently I heard President Obama's wife, Michelle, express her concern about veterans ("Give a veteran a chance," Nov. 10).
Our southwestern border has not been secure for at least 60 years and the problem has existed for at least that long. The problem has been ignored almost totally. Under the Constitution Mr. Obama is required to provide for the safety of all American citizens.
He could issue an executive order to create a truly secure border by hiring qualified veterans to do the job, starting as early as possible in 2015. I share his concerns about amnesty, but I believe his most important task is to secure the border ASAP.
If he secures the borders he will win the support of both parties and, more importantly, the vast majority of American citizens. He will create thousands of jobs for customs officials at the border plus the construction jobs that come with them. Then the two parties should be able to develop an even better amnesty program over the next two years.
