Gregg Bernstein deserves thanks for his thoughtful commentary, "Students succeed with sustained mentoring" (March 15). As a mentor for My Sister's Circle, I would add that we are not only having a positive impact on the lives of our youth but on our lives as well.
My relationship with the young woman I mentor and my involvement in My Sisters Circle has been life altering. It has made me appreciate many things in life I used to take for granted. It has inspired me to tackle challenges as I witness the success of young women who face overwhelming issues and yet surpass all expectations, and it is rewarding to witness the girls' achievements as they transition from adolescence to adulthood. I have gained as much or more than I have given, and I have a loving, trusting, inspiring relationship with a talented young woman who is now successfully pursuing her college education. It is a relationship that I trust will last a lifetime.
Mentorship is an opportunity to share and support a girl's dreams and accomplishments and provide a trusting and long term support system to help her through her disappointments, doubts and challenges. My Sister's Circle gets it right. Long term relationships that establish trust, support of all aspects of a young woman's development, mentor support as they help them deal with the challenges of their lives, and staff that effuses excitement, commitment, care and support.
Mentorship with My Sisters Circle is not a one or two year experience but the creation of a lifelong relationship with an inspiring young woman who can exceed the highest expectations with the love, support and direction of a committed mentor. The experience has transformed me. My life is richer, my appreciation for common things in life greater and my love of the young woman I mentor is without bounds.
