Medicaid helps elderly, disabled

As a health care professional, I would like to clarify a comment made in The Sun's editorial concerning Medicaid in Maryland ("A risky cut to Medicaid," Jan. 26).

In this editorial, you assert that Medicaid is "the health insurance program for the poor." From this, one might conclude that poor people are the major recipients of most of the dollars expended by the program. In fact, almost two-thirds of Medicaid dollars are spent on the elderly and disabled. So referring to the Medicaid program as "health insurance for the poor" is misleading.
