If the public hates anything, it's the Democratic Party picking winners and losers ("Another 'sleazy' land deal?" Nov. 12).
At $11,000 an acre farmland is too expensive. So a campaign contributor to the governor gets exempted from the normal rules of the market through a gift from the state government. Imagine how much money could be made with a 255-acre farm that costs only a dollar a year to rent?
But it's all phony profit (like wind and solar energy) because when the special deals and tax breaks disappear, so does the product.
Markets decide who has the right idea. No one gifted a farm to Apple. No one gave Microsoft a farm. So why did the state's Democratic powers-that-be give this so-called "food hub" a farm?
It is because the market will not support organic farming, so the only alternative is to ditch the markets and get your favorite political party operative to pick you as a winner.
