As a pacifist, I am unqualified to articulate a military strategy. But I am aware of the potentially disastrous consequences of sending U.S. "advisers" into combat zones ("1,500 more troops to Iraq," Nov. 8).

In a major foreign policy disaster, the Bush-Cheney administration invaded Iraq in a mythical hunt for weapons of mass destruction. Several trillion tax dollars were wasted, hundreds of thousands of Iraqis were killed, destruction was rampant throughout the country and the seeds were planted for the rise of ISIS.

A sectarian government was set up in Iraq and billions of tax dollars were spent to train the Iraqi Army. As we learned from Chelsea Manning (formerly known as Bradley Manning), the training was an abysmal failure. When the corrupt Iraqi Army was confronted by ISIS, its soldiers fled.

How many more tax dollars will be spent on training in Iraq? When will our government realize that warmongering is not the answer? When will people realize that we reap what we sow?
