Rewriting history is in no way the answer to the deep-seated hatred in our country. If we go down the path of renaming parks and removing statues, what will be next ("Rename Robert E. Lee Park," June 23)? Why not just forget the Civil War ever happened, close parks, remove all of the statues and rewrite the history books? The only problem with this solution is nothing changes, the divide still exist and the hatred continues.
As a young boy having difficulty remembering some dates in history class, I asked my father what was the purpose of taking history and remembering all of these dates. He quickly said, "This is the only way to improve the future by knowing the mistakes we made in the past." In my opinion, our parks and statues should remain intact.
Remember, the Civil War was won by the North, although not perfect in many ways and the country was improved. We need to celebrate our past however flawed so we can continue to improve our future.
God bless the United States of America.
