Fact: If Dan Rodricks' recent observation in a "facts and opinions" column that "hostas make the laziest people look like master gardeners" ("Experts disagree with 'homicide' conclusion in Gray's death," June 24), was intended to make him appear urbane, witty or intelligent, it had the opposite result.
Opinion: No one who plants hostas along any sun-deficient narrow Baltimore street or alley in the hope of a little neighborhood beautification, storm water runoff reduction and reducing urban blight can by definition be deemed lazy. If it weren't for their efforts, there would be little green in neighborhoods.
In many situations, hosta is the best, if not only, plant choice in light-challenged urban soils.
One more thing, Dan: Are you anti-tree too?
