Baltimore's outrage over Freddie Gray's tragic death in police custody is at once sad and understandable ("Friends, family bid farewell to Freddie Gray," April 27).
The investigations now getting underway will wend their way to the truth about what actually happened. Some light will be shed while some parts of the tragedy will remain in darkness — the process and its outcome are all so sadly familiar.
But where is Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake in all this? Specifically, what is she doing to hold her city together and take action to keep things calm? Isn't that the job of a leader?
Or is her job merely to call the situation "unacceptable" and face the local and national press declaring that she is "disappointed"? Beautifully coiffed and stylishly dressed, she has consistently been front and center with the media.
We all know where our leader is. What we don't know is what she's doing.
