A frackless future for Maryland

Jim Guy's "No fracking in Western Md." (Oct. 10) and Robert Lawrence's "Time to ban fracking, O'Malley" (Oct. 10) make an indisputable case for keeping fracking out of Maryland.

Mr. Guy argues that the risks of fracking are unacceptable and that local communities, far from benefiting from fracking, would be burdened by environmental, health and infrastructure costs. Mr. Lawrence cites water contamination, negative health effects and occupational safety hazards in the states that already have been affected by fracking.

Fracking has been ruinous to communities across the nation. It is terrifying to imagine Maryland, our "America in Miniature," having its water, air and the health of its citizens compromised to satisfy the greedy corporations eager export its natural resources.

Everyone who loves their family, their community and the environment needs to hold Gov. Martin O'Malley accountable for a frackless, safe future for Maryland.
