On fracking, O'Malley betrays his supposed principles

Wenonah Hauter's Dec. 3 op-ed, "There is no safe fracking, Mr. O'Malley," was exactly the kind of criticism that the O'Malley administration, and their self-proclaimed commitment to "protecting our environment" deserves. Opening Maryland to fracking undermines any goal the O'Malley administration has put forth in reducing greenhouse gas admissions, increasing renewable energy sources and combating deforestation (as stated in their Greenhouse Gas Reduction Plan, published last July) and effectively exposes such promises as fraudulent rhetoric by someone whose real goals lie in continuing his ascent of the political ladder.

The issue of fracking is among this generation's most important ethical concerns. Its debate has reached an international level, growing more fervent despite very little coverage in mainstream media outlets. The Baltimore Sun's courage in publishing Ms. Hauter's op-ed represents a crucial step in bringing this debate to the attention of all Marylanders and providing them with the information they need to judge for themselves.
