Sierra Club opposes fracking plan

A recent article reported that the Sierra Club "praised the administration's conclusions" regarding opening the state to fracking ("O'Malley administration sets out path to fracking in Md.," Nov. 25).

This is an inaccurate representation of our position.

The Sierra Club is opposed to fracking. Fracking has caused damage in communities across the country by polluting our air and water, and contributing to the destabilization of our climate.

However, should Gov.-elect Larry Hogan make good on his pledge to open Maryland to this dangerous practice, Marylanders need every protection they can get, and the current regulations are decades old.

We recognize that the O'Malley administration's proposal provides significant improvements compared with existing regulations, but we have never suggested its proposal is sufficient. And we fundamentally disagree with the governor's conclusion that such regulation would make fracking safe.
