Communication is vital to stemming the spread of Ebola

Congratulations on calling attention to the essential role communication plays in stemming the spread of Ebola ("Public health experts stress importance of trust in West Africa as they fight Ebola," Nov. 17).

Accurate, trust-worthy communication is important throughout the continuum of prevention, care seeking, safe treatment and safe burial.

For more than 25 years, the Johns Hopkins Center for Communication Programs has specialized in creating public health campaigns designed to fight malaria, HIV/AIDS and other deadly diseases. Our expertise has prepared us well for tackling Ebola, particularly in Liberia, where CCP worked closely with the Ministry of Health to rebuild the health-care system after the country's civil war.

We continue to work hand in hand with Liberian health officials to create credible, coordinated and timely messages in response to Ebola. The center has four staff members on the ground in Liberia, where they are training health care workers and volunteers in the field, developing appropriate materials and messages and conducting research and evaluation to ensure the right messages are getting through.

CCP is also working with the Liberian government to produce a series of public service radio announcements that will be broadcast across the country.

At home, our staff has assembled an online collection of Ebola resources, materials and tools for the global health community at ebolacommunicationnetwork.org.
