I am disappointed but not surprised by the furor over whether to fully fund the Department of Homeland Security ("Congress OKs deal to avoid shutdown at Homeland Security," Feb. 27).
My frustration is not over the positions Democrats and Republicans hold regarding whether to fully fund the department. Both parties have a right and responsibility to push for their values. Part of my disappointment is over the rhetoric used by Democrats who support full funding.
Democrats are providing a misleading argument on the issue. They claim that if the Republicans do not back down on cutting funds to carry out the president's executive order on immigration, the Republicans would bear responsibility for closing down DHS.
Yet the Democrats conveniently fail to admit their culpability in closing down DHS if they refuse to pass the Republican spending bill or if the president vetoes it.
Whether one agrees or disagrees with the House, the original bill in no way jeopardizes our country's security. I guess Democrats believe the public is too stupid to see through their false claims.
