Debt is rising even as deficits shrink

In his column "The right systematically manufactures bogus news" (Nov. 25), commentator Thomas F. Schaller is guilty of engaging in the very thing he is writing about.

As a political science teacher, he should know the difference between deficit and debt. Does he refer only to the deficit because those numbers give the illusion that all is well with this administration's handling of the budget?

The deficit is how much more we spend each year compared to what we take in. Each year's deficit adds to the debt. So when we have a deficit, no matter what that percentage might be, each year the debt just gets bigger.
