Confidentiality clauses have no place in government

In the Sun Investigates story on "Price of legal action: silence" (Dec. 28), Del. Curt Anderson is quoted as saying, "If settlements are paid with public money, there shouldn't be a confidentiality clause."

Delegate Anderson is correct, but he did not go far enough. Confidentiality clauses involving government should not exist. The legislature should ban these clauses, except as specifically authorized by a court, as a matter of public policy which would quickly stop local governments from trying to hide their actions from the public.
