As far as I'm concerned, Anthony Brown can really trace his election loss to the Democratic Governors Association money that fueled the negative campaign against Republican Larry Hogan.
Mr. Brown's campaign was directed at non-issues — a woman's right to choose, contraceptives, assault rifles, etc. — all of which have already been settled. At the same time Mr. Brown's managers lost sight of the real issues, such as taxes and wasteful government spending, that Mr. Hogan capitalized on in his campaign.
I am certain that Mr. Brown is a good person, but he should have vetoed the negativity. Failing to do so showed his lack of leadership. And it's no wonder Mr. Hogan's campaign didn't have to spend as much as Mr. Brown's — since the Democratic Governors Association money was like a gift his campaign.
