Selective reading of Leviticus won't justify bigotry

Letter writer Adam Goldfinger objected to Eddie Zipperer's references to Leviticus and states that he does indeed try to follow the laws in this book ("Yes, some people do follow the bible to the letter," April 3). I find myself wondering how many people Mr. Goldfinger has personally stoned to death as he is commanded to do in Vayikra Chapters 20 and 24. I also wonder how carefully he has observed the proper manner in which to buy and sell slaves as mandated in Vayikra 25.

In all seriousness, though, I think that the point Mr. Zipperer was trying to make is that there are far too many individuals (especially in the political arena) who use Leviticus to justify their anti-gay bigotry, while conveniently overlooking the rest of that book's content. As a practicing Christian, I agree with Mr. Zipperer ("The conservative case for same-sex marriage," March 29).
