Regarding Lauren Young's recent commentary on Baltimore City's push to pass legislation prohibiting panhandling, most of us find this hard to think even about, let alone take personal action to remedy ("Some laws still ugly," Nov. 28).
We are trained from birth to look for beauty. To avoid the discomforting and the "ugly." To hand it over to others and hope for the best. It's like watching a movie about unfortunate beings, then walking away afterward and closing a door on the unpleasantness and pain instead of participating in even the smallest way toward find a solution.
It's easy: We turn our heads. We chat. We pay attention to anything else but what's happening right in front of us.
It was difficult for me even to read Ms. Young's article but incredibly important to know and remember, especially at this time of year. And even more difficult, of course, to do something about, even in the smallest way.
