The article, "New BDC plan calls for small-business help" (Nov. 19), makes me wonder how the Baltimore Development Corporation could possibly be serious.

Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake proclaims that "small business is the backbone of (our) economy." The BDC's president states that "keeping businesses in Baltimore (is) our top priority." And the organization's director of strategy says the BDC's top mission is to help companies already in Baltimore.

Yet the city paid $140,000 to a firm in Austin, Texas, to write an economic development plan for Baltimore. Seriously? If the people in authority mean what they say, they should have invested the $140,000 back into our community by hiring a Baltimore-based company to do the report.
