Bailey: 'I take full responsibility' for election law violation [Letter]

You may have seen the news earlier this week: My campaign for the House of Delegates made an error involving an authority line for which I take full responsibility ("District 12 candidate Bailey charged with criminal election law violation," June 2).

They say that taking responsibility, honesty and integrity are characteristics of sound leaders. I won't change. I won't be distracted from working for Baltimore and Howard counties' working- and middle-class families, small businesses, senior citizens and veterans to ensure they receive the representation they deserve and expect from their legislators.

As a lifelong resident of District 12, I am one of few candidates with a proven record of fighting for quality public schools and keeping neighborhoods safe as a community and civic leader. I welcome comparisons of my record with that of my nine competitors in the Democratic primary race. I've served on the board of countless community and civic organizations; public service is my calling and I am determined to make our communities a better place to live, raise a family, run a business and enjoy retirement.

I'm a proud Democrat. I'm a founding member of a local Democratic club and voters elected me to represent them on the State Central Committee. I went on to serve as chairman of the Baltimore County Democratic Party, partnering with leaders like County Executive Jim Smith to elect President Barack Obama and reelect U.S. Sen. Barbara Mikulski and Gov. Martin O'Malley.

I've been endorsed by the Maryland State Education Association, the Howard County Education Association and the Teachers Association of Baltimore County — more 11,000 selfless educators who inspire our kids every day. These groups know that in Annapolis I will put our local schools first and support our teachers while working to end classroom overcrowding, fix aging schools, ensure universal Pre-K, implement Common Core the right way and keep Maryland No. 1 in public education.

My campaign is about strengthening our economy and creating good, family sustaining jobs while protecting society's vulnerable and investing in our future.

I've spoken to people from Arbutus and Catonsville in Baltimore County to Columbia and Elkridge in Howard County. They all want to see their government work harder for them. They want a workhorse, not a show horse like some the politicians out there. I promise District 12 voters that I am up to that challenge. A vote for me ensures you'll receive the representation you deserve and expect.

Brian S. Bailey, Halethorpe
