William J. Yeager, a retired Chesapeake & Potomac Telephone Co. engineer and World War II veteran, died Monday from congestive heart failure at Carroll Hospice's Dove House in Westminster. He was 90.
The son of William John Yeager, a Kermo Laundry Co. route supervisor, and Mary Agnes Sweeney Yeager, William Joseph Yeager was born in Baltimore and raised in Catonsville.
A 1944 graduate of Catonsville High School, Mr. Yeager enlisted in the Air Force and served in Panama as a Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress mechanic. He was discharged in 1947.
Mr. Yeager went to work for the old C&P Telephone Co. in 1948 as an engineer, and at the time of his retirement in 1986 was working at its facility at Pratt and Light streets.
The longtime Westminster resident was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America.
He was also an avid duckpin bowler and enjoyed fishing, crabbing, travel and visiting casinos.
His wife of 56 years, the former Dorothy Louise Pletcher, died in 2004.
Mr. Yeager was a communicant of St. John Roman Catholic Church, 43 Monroe St., Westminster, where a Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 12:30 p.m. Friday.
He is survived by two sons, William L. "Bill" Yeager of Queen Anne and David M. Yeager of Gulf Breeze, Fla.; a daughter, Donna L. Carlo of Herndon, Va.; a brother, Lawrence J. Yeager of Westminster; and two grandchildren.
