William L. Tarbert Sr., a retired sanitarian and farmer, died in his sleep of undetermined causes Feb. 1 at his Parkton farm. He was 93.
The son of William A. Tarbert, a farmer, and Jane Regan Lupo Tarbert, a homemaker, William Lupo Tarbert was born in Milwaukee and raised on his parents' farm in Sparks.
After graduating in 1939 from Friends School, he earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Maryland, College Park in 1942.
During World War II, he served with the Office of Strategic Services in China until being discharged in 1945.
He worked as an artificial inseminator for the University of Maryland before taking a job in 1956 as a dairy industry sanitarian in the state Department of Health. He retired in 1983.
Mr. Tarbert also farmed in Baltimore County for most of his life.
He was a former member of the Baltimore County school board and of the Vocational Technical School Board of Baltimore County. He was a former director of Sparks State Bank, and was a member and former secretary of the Junior Gunpowder Farmers Club of Parkton.
Mr. Tarbert was a communicant of Immanuel Episcopal Church in Glencoe.
In addition to farming, he enjoyed woodworking.
His wife, the former Barbara Bacon, whom he married in 1952, died in 2000.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Feb. 27 at Monkton United Methodist Cemetery, 16527 Garfield Ave., Monkton. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Feb. 28 at the Parkton American Legion, 19520 York Road, Parkton.
Mr. Tarbert is survived by his son, William L. Tarbert Jr. of Parkton; a daughter, Regan Tarbert Doi of Foster City, Calif.; and three grandchildren.
